Virginia Woolf once said that you cannot think well, love well, or sleep well unless you have eaten well. For some people, however, food is not just a necessity, but rather a passion. Eating to live is the mainstream, but some live to eat!
So when it comes to the love of good food, these people can even go overboard and spend a lot of money to satisfy their taste. Some of these foods are extremely expensive around the world, but food lovers find the price justified for their experience.
CAVIAR
Caviar is a rare and excellent delicacy for gourmets. It is derived from the eggs of the sturgeon and can only be legally sold in small quantities due to the endangerment of the sturgeon. The clearer the roe (caviar) is, the better its quality. If you do not know the value of caviar, you may be surprised to learn that one kilogram of caviar can cost up to $35,000.
SAFFRON
If you find that saffron is sold at a price of $1000 or more per kilogram, do not be alarmed, because that’s why it’s called Red Gold! Saffron is one of the most expensive foods to come from the Middle East.
Saffron is picked from flowers that grow for only 7 days in the fall of the year. It is said that it takes 3,00,000 blossoms to get just one kilogram of saffron. That’s a lot of work! The royal aroma and rarity of this spice justify its extravagant price.
KOPI LUWAK COFFEE
Every frahling lover knows Kopi Luwak coffee and wishes to drink it once in a lifetime. But this delicious luxury is as expensive as $700 per kg! Kopi Luwak coffee, also known as civet coffee, is a coffee produced by fermentation in the digestive tract of the civet cat. Although some people have reservations, others believe that fermentation improves the taste of the coffee and results in an excellent espresso. However, before you buy it, you should do some research.
WHITE TRUFFLE
These white truffles, which sell for over $1,00,000 per kg, are no ordinary truffles. The white truffles with their exquisite flavor and aroma grow in Alba, Italy. Since they require special conditions for their growth and preservation, they are very rare and scarce. Each year, the World Truffle Fair hosts an international, high-profile auction where gourmets from around the world bid for the truffles. In 2007, a record-breaking 1.5 kg truffle was auctioned for $330,000 by Stanley Ho.
EDIBLE GOLD
Edible gold should definitely not be missing from the list of the most expensive foods. Although it has no appealing taste or aroma, edible gold is used only for decoration purposes. A pound of edible gold that pleases your eyes costs about $15,000! That’s a huge amount, but who would not mind sprinkling some gold on their food.
